Some may say that curiosity killed the cat, but for the core cats of Vancouver, British Columbia's Curious Cats Theatre Collective, Maryth Gilroy, Karen Hamm and Sandra Medeiros, curiosity sparks creativity in the cat!
Curious Cats Theatre Collective is a new Vancouver company dedicated to producing theatre that is at turns both entertaining and thought-provoking. The Curious Cats aim to provide an environment wherein Vancouver creatives may come together to share expertise and resources in order to bring their artistic visions to fruition.
The Cats bring together artists who wish to create with and learn from each other offering a collaborative environment for artists to mentor each other and work on projects which may not otherwise be produced. The Cats place a special emphasis on providing opportunities to emerging artists and technicians.
Maryth brings her extensive directing, acting and producing experience, and of course her curiosity, to the role of Co-Artistic Director of Curious Cats Theatre Collective. She is excited to be founding this company alongside long-time colleagues Sandra Medeiros, and Karen Hamm with whom she has lived many many lives co-creating.
Maryth takes great pleasure in exploring tales of the human experience and was enamored with theatre from an early age. She began acting as a child and has been directing and producing for more than 30 years.
Maryth served as Co-Artistic Director of Hamm It Up Productions in Winnipeg directing several plays for the company while also directing and acting independently. After moving to Vancouver, she studied directing at Capilano University and continued acting, directing and collaborating with various independent theatre companies including Portuguese Buns (Vancouver), DSR Productions (Vancouver) and most recently, Leather and Lace Theatre (Vancouver). Over the course of many years she produced, directed and acted in a number of shows alongside her late husband, writer, actor and Gastown tour guide, Jason T. Broadfoot.
Originally from Winnipeg, Karen has acted, directed and produced theatre for 35 years across Canada. Her first love was acting and she has worked professionally and taken the stage in countless shows across the country.
Although she has worked with many noted theatre companies across Canada including Manitoba Theatre for Young People (Winnipeg), Blue Whale Theatre (Montreal), Monster Theatre (Vancouver), Naked Goddess Productions (Vancouver), Leather and Lace Theatre (Vancouver) and Stageworks Theatre Company (Vancouver), her greatest joy was founding and acting as Artistic Director of Hamm It Up Productions (Winnipeg) for 15 years. As well as producing a regular full season of plays, Hamm It Up Productions produced improvised murder mysteries and plays, toured Fringe Festivals, founded The Manitoba Regional Tournament of the Canadian National Improv Games (Ottawa) and produced the first Winnipeg Improv Festival (Winnipeg).
Karen is pleased to be founding Curious Cats Theatre Collective (Vancouver) with long-time collaborators Maryth Gilroy and Sandra Medeiros.
Sandra is a Portuguese-Canadian actor, writer, producer, and director who first fell in love with acting at the age of 10 when she beat out everyone in her class to play Oliver Twist. She has worked with many theatre companies, including Naked Goddess Productions (Vancouver), Leather and Lace Theatre (Vancouver), Deep Cove Stage Society (Vancouver) as well as Backbone Theatre (Vancouver).
As co-founder and Artistic Director of Naked Goddess Productions, Sandra has produced numerous shows, garnering a Joey Award and multiple Jessie Richardson Award nominations. Sandra also acts as co-artistic director of Portuguese Buns Productions (Vancouver) which created the sold out, site-specific work FESTA!. Sandra loves collaborating with fun, fabulous women and is pawsitively pleased to join forces with Maryth and Karen as one third of Curious Cats Theatre Collective (Vancouver).
KAREN GREEN is associate publisher at Vancouver’s Anvil Press. She has also worked and consulted with various companies (communications and publishing) over the years, e.g. Word Vancouver, BC Book Prizes, Circle Craft Christmas Market, See Seven, and Chutzpah! (via Rebus Creative where she was communications director); UBC Press; Prairie Books Now (editor); Scirocco Drama; Winnipeg and Toronto Fringe festivals; Winnipeg’s Improv Festival (publicist); and, Manitoba Theatre for Young People (publicist). Karen is thrilled to be working with Curious Cats!
